Setting up ID Check

How to license displays, setup ID Check, configure it, and reading the results.

Advanced ID Check adds identity verification to check-in on SinePoint Pro and asks visitors scan and validate their government issued ID document during check-in.

What you need before you start

  • ID Check licenses purchased for your Sine team account

  • A supported iPad running SinePoint Pro v26.1.0 or newer

  • Your iPad connected to your account

This feature needs to be activated by Sine. If you cannot see your purchased licenses, please contact us by using the chat bubble at the bottom right of this screen.

Connecting your displays

If your displays aren't connected, follow Connecting an iPad display using the Quick Connect method. Connected displays will appear on the Displays page in Core.

Tip: Its best practice to give displays a name you will still recognise in six months. As an example Reception iPad West and Loading dock wall mounted are useful names.

Turning on ID Check

The ID check feature can be turned on for all licensed displays from the site settings screen.

  1. Click Locations from the sidebar menu

  2. Select your desired site

  3. Click on the iPad tab

  4. Under SinePoint Pro features, turn on Enable ID check.

Once this is on, every check-in from a licensed display will require an ID scan. Displays at the same site that aren't licensed skip the requirement entirely and check visitors in without ID Check, which is worth remembering if you want a fallback lane at a busy reception.

Assign a license to a display

ID Check licenses are assigned per display and cannot be moved afterwards, picking the correct display before licensing is important.

  1. Go to the Displays page and find the display you want to license.

  2. Click the settings cog to open the display settings modal.

  3. Scroll to the ID Check section.

  4. Select assign license.

Note: Licences stay with the display once assigned and can't be removed without assistance from our support team.

Contact support if you need more capacity, can't see the capacity you've purchased, or need a licence removed from a display that has been replaced, disconnected, or has stopped working. We will sort it out on our end.

Configure how ID Check behaves

From the iPad tab on the Site settings page, click the edit button below the Enable ID check toggle to open the ID check settings.

Exclude visitor types

Anyone checking in under an excluded visitor type will not be asked to scan an ID document, even on a licensed display.

This is a great way to handle staff, regular contractors, or anyone who reasonably won't be carrying ID.

Note: This option is only available on Core Medium+ plans.

Review invalid documents

An invalid scan result will force the visitors pass into pending, and ask an admin or host to manually review the pass before approving.

With it off, the ID Check result has no bearing on auto-approval.

A result is invalid when the document is expired, or when Face Check doesn't return a score at or above the minimum you set.

Tip: when you set a minimum Face Check score, pick it based on how much friction your front desk can absorb. A high score catches more mismatches and also sends more legitimate visitors to a person for approval.

Face Check and Photo capture

Face Check compares the document photo with the photo taken of the visitor at check-in and returns a similarity score. It needs both photos, and only runs where photo capture is on and the site is in a supported region.

Turn on photo capture

  1. Go to Site settings and open the Passes tab.

  2. Under Check-in requirements, turn on Photo required.

  3. Click edit to configure it.

The photo settings have their own visitor type exclusions, plus a toggle for Capture a new photo on each check-in.

When no Similarity Score is produced

Face Check returns no score when:

  • The site is in a region where Face Check isn't available

  • Photo required is off for the site

  • The visitor's visitor type is excluded from the photo requirement

  • The visitor is returning and Capture a new photo on each check-in is off

  • The visitor declines Face Check at the kiosk

With Review invalid documents enabled, every one of these sends the pass to an admin or host for review, even when the document itself is legitimate.

Where Photo capture is enabled, both photos sit on the pass and the reviewer can compare them by hand.

Factor that into your review load, or turn Review invalid documents off at those sites so check-ins auto-approve and the results stay on the pass for auditing later.

Where Face Check is available

Face Check is not available in Illinois, Texas, Oregon, Washington, New York, Vermont, or Maryland.

Sites in those states can still use document scanning, validation, and expiry checks. They just won't get a face match score.

If Face Check isn't running at a site outside those states, contact support.

Visitors without an ID

On a licensed display at a site with ID Check enabled, scanning a document is a hard requirement. A visitor who doesn't have their ID with them cannot complete check-in on that kiosk.

There are a few ways around it:

  • Web check-in, either by scanning your QR poster or through a Fast Track invitation

  • Sine Pro check-in, using nearby sites, geofence, or the QR poster

  • A second, unlicensed display at the same site, which skips the ID requirement

  • A visitor type excluded from ID Check, on Core Medium plans and above

It's worth setting at least one of these up before you enable ID Check, so your front desk has an answer ready the first time someone turns up without a licence in their wallet.

What the visitor sees at the kiosk

The visitor scans their document, and their first, middle and last name will be prefilled. A visitor is still able to modify their name, which will be printed on the badge and shown on the pass.


The scan result stored on the dashboard always shows the actual document fields.

Reading ID Check results on a pass

Open the visitor's pass in the Web Dashboard, the ID Check entry in the Pass activity will show a snapshot of the document, the document type, a count of checks passed and failed, expiration status, the document name, and the Face Check score.

How to interpret the security checks

A red/invalid result doesn't automatically mean a fraudulent document. Some of the security checks fail for boring reasons. Here is what each one is actually testing.

Security checks (overall)

The aggregate result across every authenticity check that ran.

  • Valid means the document passed all of them.

  • Invalid means at least one sub-check below failed, so it usually reflects those failures rather than telling you anything new on its own.

Image quality

Whether the scan itself was usable: blur, glare, resolution.

  • Valid means the capture was clean enough to process.

  • Invalid means you need a re-scan, and it says nothing about whether the document is genuine.

Text fields

A cross-check that the printed data matches the machine readable zone, and the barcode or chip where the document has one.

  • Valid means the data is consistent across all sources.

  • Invalid means the printed details and the encoded details disagree, or the check cascaded from an MRZ failure.

VDS

A digital signature check on the Visible Digital Seal, a signed barcode found on some documents such as visas and emergency passports.

  • Valid means the signature verified.

  • Invalid means either the signature failed, or the document simply doesn't carry a VDS at all, so check the field level detail before treating it as a red flag.

MRZ

Checksum and format validation of the machine readable zone against the ICAO 9303 standard.

  • Valid means the check digits and format are correct.

  • Invalid can mean a checksum failure or a misread, but it also fires on expired documents by default, so an expired licence will fail MRZ without any suggestion of tampering.

The short version

Invalid on image quality, or on MRZ and text fields where the document is expired, is usually explainable. Try a re-scan, or check the expiry date.

Invalid on VDS or on the overall security checks with no expiry or quality problem to explain it is the stronger signal. Those are the ones worth a manual review.

What data Sine stores

Document processing happens on the iPad itself. Only the essential result fields are sent to the dashboard, which is why the pass record shows things like document type, expiry status, and check results rather than the raw document. Other than the cropped document photo, document images, dates of birth, and document numbers aren't stored.

  • Increase your licence capacity, or you can't see the capacity you have bought

  • Recover a licence from a display that has been replaced, disconnected, or has stopped working

  • Work out why Face Check isn't running at a site outside the excluded states
